On Monday this week, our fellows had the chance to explore the hidden machinery behind one of the EU’s most defining achievements: the Schengen Area.
We were joined for an online lecture by Krum Garkov, former Executive Director of eu-LISA the agency behind the large-scale information systems that make Schengen possible. Mr. Garkov explained how digital technologies support the free movement of people across borders, and why Schengen is much more than a "travel" agreement.
We learned how policy, technology, and cooperation between member states all come together to form the foundation of this unique space that has redefined European integration. Garkov spoke about the role of agencies like eu-LISA, in managing complex data systems and in enabling trust, security, and real coordination across countries.
Our fellows had the chance to reflect on the delicate balance between freedom and control, openness and security, and how much behind-the-scenes work goes into preserving that balance.
Thank you to Krum Garkov for sharing his insights and to our fellows for their constant enthusiasm!
